India's first quantum computing testing beds, built locally, will be dedicated on April 14 at SRM University-AP and Medha Towers in Amaravati, officials said.
India’s first quantum computing testing beds, built and assembled locally, will be dedicated to the nation on April 14, 2026, coinciding with World Quantum Day, Secretary to the Chief Minister P.S. Pradyumna said on Thursday (April 9, 2026).
The two testing beds, meaning two quantum computers that will serve as a benchmark for testing various components, are coming up at SRM University-A.P. and Medha Towers in Amaravati. “Till date, we did not have a quantum testing computer in the country that can be used as a reference while testing different components, part of the quantum computing ecosystem,” Mr. Pradyumna said, adding that Andhra Pradesh is the first State to take this up with the encouragement of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.
The testing beds have been assembled by students, scientists, and researchers. Speakers at the press conference said a quantum computer can do everything a classical computer does, but the difference is that it can take less time to complete operations. They added that quantum computers will not replace classical computers.
Quantum computing has four pillars and 15 to 20 major components. The pillars are hardware development, software development, skill and research, and partnership.
“The country, despite having the required skill and talent, has depended on other countries for applications because we never focussed on manufacturing hardware here. Wealth lies in hardware, and it is high time we start focussing on this part,” Mr. Pradyumna said.
The two centres are important for manufacturing hardware, and all the required set-up has been put in place, he said.
