Donkarayi power house undergoes its second overhaul in 13 years, addressing operational issues and enhancing energy efficiency.
The single 25-MW hydel power unit at Donkarayi canal power house situated on the Andhra-Odisha border is teeming with activity as scores of engineers and workers are giving it a complete makeover after 13 years.
This unit was commissioned in 1983 and is currently undergoing a capital overhaul and the last time a refit happened was in 2012.
The AP-Genco officials decided to do the second overhaul on finding an oil leak in the turbine engine in December 2025 that intensified the operational wear and tear.
Chennai-based Shree Abirami Engineering Works Limited has since been doing the overhaul round-the-clock as it has been targeted to finish the job by the end of May.
The canal is also being reinforced to stop friction losses which are causing wastage of energy.
In a related development, the Andhra Pradesh and Odisha governments have recently got residual life assessment of the 70-year-old 120-MW inter-State Machkund hydro electric project done.
