India is not a major AI player, we don't produce anything: Rahul Gandhi

India is not a major AI player, we don't produce anything: Rahul Gandhi

India Today
Friday, March 06, 2026 01:01:04 PM UTC

During an interaction with students at a college in Kerala, Rahul Gandhi claimed that under the US deal, India's biggest asset – data – has been handed over to America.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said on Thursday that Indian higher education is under ideological attack, with a certain type being imposed. He made the remarks during an interaction with students at Kerala's Marian College Kuttikkanam (Autonomous). "If you look at VCs, a large number of them are made VCs because they belong to the RSS. Of course, that has to be stopped. The Indian education system should particularly not be limited to the divisive view of RSS," he added.

The Leader of Opposition also claimed that India has not been successful with the advent of AI, appearing to take a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who promoted the country's potential and vision to be a global player in the future.

"There are two players in the AI game. The United States and China. India, unfortunately, whether it is in robotics, or AI, or modern technology, is not really a major player. Certainly, when compared to the US or China. You saw that in the AI Summit itself, a Chinese robot was masquerading as an Indian robot. If you want to be powerful at AI, you have to control your own data...The US deal that has just been done by the Prime Minister has handed over our entire data to the United States...We have damaged our potential in AI tremendously over the last couple of weeks... Jobs in the services and software industry, which were the mainstay of our country, are going to be wiped out by AI. I am worried that a transition is taking place on the data, manufacturing, and mobility front, and we are just looking," Rahul Gandhi said during the interaction.

His remarks about the Chinese robot were in reference to the Galgotias University row at the India AI Summit, where they showcased a Chinese robodog as their own creation. The incident stirred up a massive controversy.

Additionally, the rise of AI remains a point of big worry across the globe, especially amid the mass layoffs happening in big fims.

Rahul Gandhi also took a jibe at the PM Modi-led government over the recent India-US trade deal, which has received massive backlash from the Opposition who claim it goes against the farmers.
