India Today
IFS officer Parveen Kaswan shared an interesting and informative post about how cheetahs were hunted and tortured before they went extinct.
India has rewritten history today on September 17 as eight cheetahs were translocated to the country from Namibia. The incredible event was achieved as a part of the prime minister's efforts to revitalise and diversify the country's wildlife and habitat. After 70 years of being declared extinct in the country, the reintroduction of cheetahs has sparked chatter on social media.
Contributing to the discussion, IFS officer Parveen Kaswan shared an interesting and informative post about how these majestic big cats were hunted and tortured before they went extinct. In the detailed Twitter thread, Kaswan shared clips that show how cheetahs were kept as pets, used for hunting and other sports.
“When #Cheetah are coming back to #India. A look at how the last of the lots were hunted, maimed and domesticated for hunting parties. Video made in 1939,” read the caption.

The post further details about the ill fate of cheetahs. “Not only cheetah but most of the charismatic animals were hunted in those days by kings and Britishers. Until the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 was passed, it was very late. Cheetahs were already extinct from India. Footage is an archive of Wilderness Films India Ltd,” added the caption.
