During the hearing, the bench led by Justice Milind Jadhav asked both sides to work out mutually acceptable language for the apology without prejudice to their respective rights and contentions.
The Bombay High Court on Wednesday directed Bollywood singer Kumar Sanu and his former wife Rita Bhattacharya to jointly settle the wording of a public apology, after Bhattacharya agreed to apologise over remarks she allegedly made against him in media interviews.
The court’s direction came in a defamation suit filed by the singer, who has sought both an apology and monetary damages worth Rs 50 crore, according to a suit filed in December last year.
During the hearing, the bench led by Justice Milind Jadhav asked both sides to work out mutually acceptable language for the apology without prejudice to their respective rights and contentions.
Bhattacharya’s counsel informed the court that she was willing to issue an apology, while Sanu’s legal team said a public statement and apology to the media would suffice for the singer to consider withdrawing further proceedings.
Sanu, whose original name is Sanu Kumar Bhattacharjee, had approached the court in December 2025 with a Rs 50 crore defamation claim against his former wife Bhattacharya.
He alleged that comments made by her in interviews in September 2025, which were widely circulated across social media and garnered over 1.5 million views, harmed his professional standing and led to loss of business opportunities.

India on Monday said it has not held bilateral talks with the United States on deploying naval vessels to secure merchant shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The clarification came after US President Donald Trump urged countries to send warships to keep the strategic waterway open amid tensions with Iran.
