Windstorm in Kannur causes widespread destruction, damaging houses, crops, and blocking roads with fallen trees.
A powerful windstorm that struck around 7 a.m. on Thursday (May 29, 2025) caused widespread destruction across several parts of Kannur, damaging houses and crops.
Roofs were torn off buildings, and numerous trees were uprooted as the storm moved from Munderi to Elayavoor South. The impact was severe at Mattanur, where fallen trees blocked roads.
Elayavoor, which had already suffered cyclone-related damage a day before, witnessed further destruction as strong winds battered the area again. M.V. Sreejesh, a resident, said that the residents were taken by surprise as the winds were so strong that they ripped off the roofs and uprooted trees. A lottery agent sustained injuries in the incident, he added.
Similarly, several houses near Secura Mall at Thazhae Chovva were also flooed following water stagnation.
At Irrity, heavy rains that had briefly subsided resumed early in the morning. A tree fell across the Taliparamba-Irrity State highway at Padiyoor. It struck a power line and fell dangerously close to a pedestrian, who miraculously escaped with only minor injuries.
Local residents acted swiftly, cutting and removing the tree to restore traffic.
Fourteen of the 16 spillway shutters at the Pazhassi dam were opened following increase in inflow of water.
