Has Jos Buttler fallen out of love playing for England? Steve Harmison thinks so
India Today
As Jos Buttler reflects on a challenging T20 World Cup, former teammates and observers say the England veteran must decide if he has the desire to continue playing international cricket.
Steve Harmison has questioned whether Jos Buttler is still enjoying his cricket for England, suggesting the veteran batter needs to look himself in the mirror and decide whether he wants to continue representing his country at the international level.
Buttler endured a miserable T20 World Cup campaign, managing just 87 runs across eight innings. The 35-year-old, widely regarded as England's finest white-ball cricketer, failed to influence matches and looked a shadow of his former self throughout the tournament.Harmison was candid in his assessment.
"He needs to look at himself in the mirror and say, 'Do I really want to carry on playing international cricket?'," the former fast bowler said on Talksport. "If he says, 'I do', then he keeps on playing for me. It's just whether the ups and downs have taken that effect."
Buttler previously stepped down as England's limited-overs captain following a series of disappointing results, but has remained in the side given his standing in the game. He played a central role in England's 2019 World Cup triumph and their T20 title win in Australia in 2022, and his contributions over the past decade have been significant.Harmison believes Buttler deserves the right to make his own call on his future, including whether he has the appetite for another full tournament cycle ahead of the 2027 World Cup in South Africa.
"I think Jos deserves the right to think, 'Have I got one more cycle in me to get through to another tournament?'" Harmison said.
But the former England seamer was clear that only Buttler can answer that question.
