Hansraj College was transformed into what students described as a private wedding venue, as elaborate arrangements were put in place for the marriage celebrations of Principal Rama Sharma's son.
Pink-and-white tents, decorative canopies and wedding preparations usually signal celebration. At Hansraj College, one of Delhi University’s most prominent institutions, they triggered outrage.
The North Delhi campus was transformed this week into what students described as a private wedding venue, as elaborate arrangements were put in place for the marriage celebrations of Principal Rama Sharma’s son. The makeover sparked protests from students who accused the administration of misusing public educational infrastructure for a personal event.

Visuals widely circulated on social media showed large sections of the college draped in colourful tents, with workers making last-minute preparations. Students alleged that parts of the campus, including the hostel building, were converted into accommodation for wedding guests, disrupting academic life and restricting student access.
More than 200 students gathered on the college grounds on Monday, led by the Students’ Federation of India's (SFI) Hansraj College unit, raising slogans and demanding accountability. Protesters accused the administration of operating with “double standards,” saying facilities routinely denied to students were suddenly made available for a private celebration.
In a statement, SFI claimed that students are not allowed to use college grounds after 4 pm for sports activities and are frequently denied permission to hold freshers’ welcomes and farewell events. The student body further alleged that the annual ‘Khelo Hansraj’ sports tournament was rescheduled to make way for the wedding arrangements.

India on Monday said it has not held bilateral talks with the United States on deploying naval vessels to secure merchant shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The clarification came after US President Donald Trump urged countries to send warships to keep the strategic waterway open amid tensions with Iran.
