India Today
Virat Kohli's Instagram account mysteriously disappeared overnight on January 30, and what followed next was unmanageable curiosity among fans on social media.
Remember the animated television series Ghayab Aya that aired on Doordarshan in the 1990s? Based on a mischievous, magical character who could appear and disappear at will, the show seems to have found a real-life parallel involving Indian cricketer Virat Kohli and his Instagram account.
Virat Kohli’s Instagram account mysteriously disappeared overnight on January 30, and what followed next was unmanageable curiosity among fans on social media.
As Kohli began trending across social media platforms and users scrambled for answers, his account was restored hours later on Friday morning. Around the same time, Kohli’s brother Vikas Kohli’s Instagram profile was also found to be deactivated. While Virat Kohli’s account reappeared around 8.30 am, Vikas Kohli’s profile remained inactive at the time of writing.
So, what is the mystery behind Virat Kohli’s disappearance and reappearance from Instagram after all?
Well, neither Kohli nor his management team has clarified whether the brief disappearance was a deliberate move or the result of a technical glitch.
In the interim, fans flooded social media with questions, tagging Instagram’s official handle and demanding answers over the missing profile. Several users also turned to his wife, actor Anushka Sharma’s Instagram account, enquiring about Kohli’s sudden absence from the platform. There was also a reference to the “Nihilist Penguin” meme, which shows the bird breaking from its colony and walking inland instead of heading to the sea.
