When Gautam Gambhir took charge of the Indian team, the T20I side was widely expected to benefit the most. The results initially supported that belief, as India went on a roll, winning one series after another and defeating strong sides away from home.
While issues with Gambhir's management in the Test arena were well documented, the T20I format appeared to be his safe space. Results were flowing, and he seemed to put no foot wrong. There was a clear mantra — grab the bull by its horns. For this side, attack was the best form of defence.

However, by the time the Asia Cup 2025 arrived, some of those principles began to shift. The experiment with Shubman Gill failed miserably, and the vice-captain was eventually shown the door by the team management.
In the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026, India haven’t looked anywhere near their best, yet they cruised through the group stage unbeaten. But reality struck hard with a humbling defeat to South Africa. Questions are now being asked not just of the players, but of Gambhir himself.
