Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode shifts five super-speciality departments to newly constructed PMSSY block for enhanced services.
Five super-speciality departments at the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, will be shifted to its newly constructed PMSSY block from Monday (April 21).
According to hospital sources, cardio-vascular thoracic surgery, genitourinary surgery, surgical gastroenterology, neurosurgery, and plastic surgery departments will now function from the new premises. Additionally, 14 operating theatres, attached intensive care units (ICUs), and wards have also been set up there. The hospital authorities said an Emergency Medicine department had already been functioning in the new block. A section of the Anaesthesia department would also be shifted there from Monday, they said. Five operating theatres were already working from there earlier. Now, their number has gone up to 19.
With this, the PMSSY block, opened on March 4, 2023, by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, is expected to be fully functional. The Union government had spent ₹120 crore, and the State government ₹75.93 crore to construct the seven-storey building under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).
Earlier, all operating theatres were located in the same building of the main hospital. With the surgical super-speciality sections shifting to the PMSSY block, it will now handle general surgery and those in Orthopaedics, ENT, and Ophthalmology departments.
Meanwhile, the hospital sources also said that new operating theatres for heart, kidney and solid organ transplant surgeries have been set up at the new building. Along with this, 20 ICU beds for each of these departments are also arranged.
Outpatient department (OP) services are open at the super-speciality section twice a week. Around 1,500 patients seek treatment at the OP and the Emergency department every month. Around 55 bypass surgeries are held there each month. The hospital authorities claimed that the introduction of the new facilities would be a major milestone in the development of the hospital.
