Superintendent of Police, Vijayapura, Laxman Nimbaragi, gave the names of the dead as Ningappa Patil, 55, Shanthavva Shankar Patil, 45, Bhimshi Sankanal, 65, Shashikala Jainapur, 45, and Dilip Patil, 50, all residents of Aliabad in Vijayapura taluk.
The family reportedly had travelled to Agni village in Yadgir district in connection with a marriage proposal and were returning via Talikote when the accident occurred.
The car driver reportedly lost control while trying to overtake another vehicle and rammed into the combine harvester.
The impact of the collision was such that the police had to get an earthmover to clear the mangled metal and extricate the bodies.
