
First rural kidney transplant done in India

India's first rural kidney transplant performed successfully at Srikakulam's Kidney Research Center, marking a significant medical milestone.
A successful kidney transplant surgery was performed at the Kidney Research Center and Super Speciality Hospitals in Srikakulam of Friday, by a team of doctors under the supervision of Dr. T. Ravi Raju, hospital mentor. Usually organ transplant procedures, are carried out in major cities. This is the first time in Indian that a kidney transplant has been performed in a rural speciality hospital, Dr. Ravi Raju, nephrologist and former Vice Chancellor of Dr. NTR UHS, said in a statement.
The surgery was conducted on a 23-year-woman who had developed kidney failure following childbirth and was on dialysis for five months. Her father agreed to donate his kidney, after he was found suitable to be a donor. The surgery was conducted by Dr. Sarat Jyotsna and Dr. Rakesh, nephrologists, Dr. Ch Umamaheswara Rao, Dr. P. Purnachandra Rao and Dr. M. Vivekananda, surgeons.
The five-hour surgery went on well and both donor and recipient are recovering, said Dr. Ravi Raju.
