
Chennai Corporation launches projects, expedites works ahead of poll

Chennai's Greater Corporation accelerates civic projects, including bridges and schools, ahead of the upcoming Assembly election.
Ahead of the Assembly election, Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has expedited civic infrastructure projects, including work on 17 bridges, in various zones of the city.
The civic body on Friday launched several projects, including the construction of hospitals, schools, playgrounds, and gymnasiums, in zones such as Tiruvottiyur, Sholinganallur, Teynampet, and Thiru.Vi.Ka. Nagar. It has focused on easing traffic congestion, promoting road safety, and mitigating floods, in addition to developmental projects, officials said.
GCC has opened a modern gymnasium in ward 126 in Mylapore and school buildings in areas such as Kannagi Nagar, Chinna Sekkadu, and Semmencherry.
In Kodambakkam zone, work on the construction of an overhead tank and sump for water supply in Kamaraj Colony was launched on Friday. Following demand from residents and councillors, GCC and Metrowater has expedited work on sewage treatment plants in areas such as Manali New Town.
According to a press release, in the past five years GCC has constructed bridges in 19 areas at an estimated cost of ₹752.82 crore. The civic body has also constructed foot over bridges in Nungambakkam and skywalk in T. Nagar.
Work on bridges is under way in areas such as Ganesapuram, Choolaimedu, Tondiarpet High Road and bridges connecting East Coast Road and Rajiv Gandhi Salai.
