In a nod to Indian fashion, EU chief Ursula von der Leyen wore an Anamika Khanna bandhgala jacket for the 16th India-EU summit.
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission and this year’s chief guest at India’s 77th Republic Day, made yet another strong sartorial statement during her visit to the country.
For the 16th India-EU Summit, held at Hyderabad House in New Delhi on January 27, she turned heads in a striking blue creation by Indian designer Anamika Khanna. At the summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, European Council President Antonio Costa, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the landmark fair trade agreement. PM Modi said India’s cooperation with the EU could help bring stability to a global order facing turmoil. He called the day “historic” as India and the EU moved their partnership into a new phase of co-development.
Ursula von der Leyen’s striking blue outfit by Anamika Khanna, meanwhile, perfectly depicted the upbeat mood.
She opted for an electric blue bandhgala featuring resham embroidery and subtle tone-on-tone 3D floral motifs, paired with ivory trousers. She wore the statement ensemble for her visit to Raj Ghat and later for the India-EU Summit.
As for the Republic Day parade, she paid tribute to Indian craftsmanship by honouring the weavers of Varanasi in a brocade Banarasi bandhgala by designer Rajesh Pratap Singh. Ursula von der Leyen wore a brocade bandhgala jacket by Rajesh Pratap Singh. (Photo: Instagram/ursulavonderleyen)
