England vs India: Captain Rohit Sharma surpassed current India coach Rahul Dravid and ex-skipper Virat Kohli after scoring his 14th 50-plus ODI score in England.
Captain Rohit Sharma surpassed the likes of Rahul Dravid, Virat Kohli and Kane Williamson to own the record for the most fifty-plus scores by any visiting player (14) in men's ODIs in England during the first ODI at the Oval on Tuesday. Notably, Dravid, Kohli and Williamson have scored 13 fifty-plus scores in men's ODIs in England.
Rohit smashed 76 runs off 58 balls while Shikhar scored 31 runs off 54 balls to help the Indian team chase down the target of 111 runs in just 18.4 overs. Earlier, Jasprit Bumrah delivered a masterclass in swing bowling as he snared six wickets and Mohammed Shami added another three to knock over England for 110.
"Looking at the overhead conditions and the pitch, the toss was a right call to make. We used the conditions upfront really well," said Rohit. "There was some swing and seam upfront and we exploited them well."
The home side were eventually bowled out in 25.2 overs for their lowest total against India in 50-over cricket. Their previous lowest - 125 - came at Jaipur in 2006.
"We have some guys in the form of their lives in Tests coming here and getting nicked off," said Buttler. "Jasprit is a great bowler to come up against. He has bowled fantastically well today and deserves these figures."
"I won't be panicking... in the last seven years our batting has been our super strength in ODI cricket and the guys in the teams are some of the best players to ever play the format for England so we don't want to panic."
The second match of the series takes place at Lord's on Thursday.
