Delhi's Uttam Nagar remains tense following the death of a 26-year-old man in a clash between two families from different communities on Holi.
Tensions flared in West Delhi's Uttam Nagar after a 26-year-old man was killed during a clash between two families from different communities on Holi. The area remained on the boil in subsequent days after Hindu outfits staged a protest and a mob vandalised and allegedly set fire to a house linked to the suspects involved in the killing of Tarun. However, normalcy returned on Saturday even though there was heavy police deployment.
Preliminary investigation by police suggested that trouble started after a 9-year-old girl from Tarun's family accidentally threw a water balloon from the terrace that landed on a woman who resided in the same locality.
Tarun's father, Memraj, told PTI that despite apologising to the woman, she gathered several members of her community.
"Soon, 15-20 people arrived with sticks and rods and started attacking us. We ran inside the house, but they locked the door from the outside. Several family members were injured," Memraj told PTI.
At that time, Tarun, who was unaware of the chaos, returned to his house after playing Holi. Spotting Tarun, the group attacked him with iron rods and sticks, repeatedly hitting his head.
"The moment he entered the street, some 8-10 people attacked him with sticks, rods and stones. My nephew had no idea about the fight, but he was still attacked. They thrashed him so badly that he died during treatment," Ramesh, Tarun's uncle, told PTI.

India on Monday said it has not held bilateral talks with the United States on deploying naval vessels to secure merchant shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The clarification came after US President Donald Trump urged countries to send warships to keep the strategic waterway open amid tensions with Iran.
