Delhi High Court seeks response from Parvesh Verma on election challenge, including Arvind Kejriwal and Sandeep Dikshit.
The Delhi High Court on Wednesday (March 26, 2025) sought response from Public Works Department Minister Parvesh Verma on a petition challenging his election from New Delhi constituency in the 2025 Assembly polls.
Justice Jasmeet Singh also sought response of the Election Commission of India (ECI) and 23 candidates, including AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal and Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit, who contested the elections from New Delhi. The court posted the matter for hearing on May 27, 2025.
The election petition was filed by Mr Vishvanath Agarwal, claiming he was not allowed to file nomination to participate in the election process. The plea claimed that the returning officer did not accepted his nomination form despite being present in the office before at 3 p.m. on January 17, 2025, last day of nomination.
The plea has sought a direction to declare the election to the New Delhi constituency null and void. It also sought to direct the ECI to conduct fresh elections on the seat.
Son of former Delhi Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma, Mrr Verma defeated AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal from the New Delhi constituency by over 4,000 votes. Mr Verma secured 30,088 votes in the election
The Delhi Assembly elections were held on February 5 and the results were declared on February 8.
Earlier on January 23, the high court had rejected a similar petition filed by Mr Agarwal saying, “the remedy of the Petitioner in the present case lies in filing an Election Petition and this writ petition cannot be entertained”.
