
Defence nursing staff now eligible for ex-servicemen benefits

Former personnel of the Military Nursing Service received formal recognition for re-employment opportunities in central civil services starting 2026. The amendment resolved previous ambiguities in eligibility and granted access to benefits including reservation quotas, age relaxation, and employment priority.
The Government of India notified an important amendment to the Ex-servicemen (Re-employment in Central Civil Services & Posts) Rules on February 09, 2026.
This change came under Article 309 of the Constitution and aimed to clarify and expand the definition of ex-servicemen eligible for re-employment in central government positions.
The new rule directly addressed prior uncertainty around the status of Military Nursing Service (MNS) officers, who previously faced ambiguity in accessing second-career opportunities after their military service.
With this amendment, personnel from the MNS, whether they served as combatants or non-combatants, were officially included within the ambit of ex-servicemen.
The notification stated, “‘ex-servicemen’ now explicitly lists the ‘Military Nursing Service of the Indian Union’ alongside the Regular Army, Navy, and Air Force.”
The clarified rule applied to all who have served in any rank, irrespective of the nature of their duties. This formal recognition provided a pathway for a broader group of former defence personnel to access post-retirement rehabilitation measures and government employment.
