
'Congress chhodo, BJP ko jodo': 8 out of 11 party MLAs join saffron camp

Eight Congress MLAs in Goa joined BJP in the presence of chief minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday.
Former Congress MLA Michael Lobo on Tuesday said that party MLAs have joined BJP to strengthen the hands of PM Modi and CM Pramod Sawant. Eight Congress MLAs, including former CM Digambar Kamat and leader of the opposition Michael Lobo, have joined the BJP today in Goa. This leaves the Congress with three MLAs in the state.

They submitted the letter of merger to secretary (Legislature). The switch will leave Congress with just 3 MLAs.
The MLAs who joined the saffron party include Digambar Kamat, Michael Lobo, Delilah Lobo, Rajesh Phaldesai, Kedar Naik, Sankalp Amonkar, Aleixo Sequeira and Rudolf Fernandes. They also met with CM Pramod Sawant, as reported by news agency ANI.

The matter pertains to a petition filed by one Nikhil Kumar Punia, who was born into an upper-caste Hindu family but supposedly converted to Buddhism later. He, along with another General Category candidate, has sought minority reservation benefits for admission to a Buddhist medical college on grounds of their purported conversion.

Energy disruption due to the war in the Middle East has exposed India's dependence on imported gas.
