CMDA redevelops Chetpet eco-park with new amenities, water sports, and sustainable features to enhance recreational amenities.
The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has started the redevelopment of Chetpet eco-park at an estimated cost of ₹20.17 crore. The project, covering 16 acres, is scheduled to be completed within six months from the date of site handover.
According to CMDA officials, the redevelopment includes new water sports facilities, musical fountains, bird-viewing decks, new entrance with a tensile roof, a 753 sq.ft-snack bar, sand pit, and activity zones.
According to the CMDA officials, lakeside improvements feature an eight-shaped reflexology pathway, outdoor gym, watch tower, play courts, and boating deck. Further, existing buildings such as the admin block, multi-level parking, fisheries lab, watch tower, handrail along the slope around the lake, and aquarium block, will be renovated.
The redevelopment will also incorporate porous surfaces such as grass or similar green cover around the lake for sustainable water management.
The improvements also include better walkways with new paver blocks, snack area such as a food kiosk, triangular landscaped section, and new amenities such as a photo point, viewing points, children’s play area, gym, recreation and play zone, drinking water, and toilet facilities.
Inaugurated in 2017, the eco-park was established following the rejuvenation of Chetpet Lake, which was affected by pollution and overgrown vegetation. The park attracts an estimated 20,000 visitors each month, with approximately 500 individuals visiting everyday.
According to the officials, urban greenery can mitigate pollution and help reduce the urban heat island effect, which causes built-up areas to retain excess heat. The redevelopment by CMDA aims to enhance recreational amenities, while maintaining the ecological balance of the area. The project timeline and execution details remain subject to the tendering and contracting process, officials added.
