
Citizens protest outside Sri Lankan Parliament in Colombo; police resort to water cannons

Police resorted to using water cannons to disperse Sri Lankan citizens who protested outside the parliament against President Gotabata Rajapaksa. The SJB, Sri Lanka’s main opposition party, announced it will move a non-confidence motion against the government.
People came out in droves on the streets of the capital Colombo as they protested and raised slogans regarding the worsening economic crisis that has plunged the island nation into turmoil.
Police had to use water cannons on demonstrators during a protest against Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa near the parliament.
Sri Lanka's main opposition party, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), on Friday, announced that it will move a no-confidence motion against the government of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and is prepared to impeach the embattled leader if he fails to address the concerns of the public facing hardships due to the worst economic crisis.
The SJB has begun to collect signatures from MPs for the no-confidence motion, according to media reports.
Rajapaksa earlier proposed the creation of a unity government, but the main opposition party, the SJB, rejected the idea.
