Can BJP unsettle TMC in its Bhabanipur bastion?
India Today
The TMC's lead in the Bhabanipur Assembly segment narrowed to just 8,297 votes in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from a margin of over 28,000 in the 2021 Assembly elections.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has fielded senior leader Suvendu Adhikari from the Bhabanipur Assembly seat, currently represented by Trinamool Congress chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He defeated the TMC leader in the 2021 Assembly polls from Nandigram.
By fielding Adhikari from Bhabanipur this time, the BJP aims to challenge the TMC in its stronghold. Will he be able to repeat his Nandigram feat there?
The BJP can take comfort from the fact that the TMC’s lead in the Bhabanipur Assembly segment narrowed to just 8,297 votes in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from a margin of over 28,000 in the 2021 Assembly elections.
According to an analysis of the 2024 Lok Sabha results by The Telegraph, the BJP led from 149 of the 269 booths in Bhabanipur, and five of the eight Kolkata Municipal Corporation wards under the Assembly segment.
The TMC also faced a scare in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, trailing the BJP by 185 votes there. However, a review of all elections since 2011 — three Assembly, three Lok Sabha, and two bypolls — shows that Bhabanipur has long been a TMC bastion.
Home to Mamata Banerjee, the constituency has a mixed demographic. Bengalis make up nearly 40 per cent of the electorate, while Gujaratis, Marwaris, Biharis, Sikhs, and others account for another 40 per cent. Muslims comprise around 20 per cent of the population, according to multiple reports.
