Bangalore University plans 2.5-km flyover to decrease traffic density in Jnanabharathi campus

Two main roads pass through Jnanabharathi campus — one from Mysuru Road towards Ullal and another from Nagarbhavi towards Kengeri. There has been a lot of traffic on both these roads, and accidents are common during peak hours. In this context, it has been a long-standing demand of Bangalore University students to impose restrictions on public vehicle inside the campus.

To decrease traffic density inside its Jnanabharathi campus, the Bangalore University is planning to construct 2.5-km flyover connecting Mysuru Road and Ullala Main Road.

“Following the increase in vehicle density inside the campus and the resultant disturbance to academic activities, the university has placed a proposal before Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D.K. Shivakumar, during his recent visit to the Jnanabharathi campus, to construct a flyover,” a source in the university said.

“It has become an everyday struggle to take classes and also for students to concentrate due to the movement of vehicles. Noise pollution has increased causing disturbance to academic activities,” said an official source from the university.

A proposal on the flyover will soon be submitted to the government of Karnataka after discussing it in the syndicate.

Two years ago, a post-graduate student, Shilpashree, had died in a bus accident that occurred on the campus. Following this, the students had urged the authorities to impose restrictions on public vehicle inside the campus again. The university, considering the students’ protest, has imposed restrictions on vehicles from Nagarbhavi to Kengeri after 10 p.m.

Lokesh Ram, a Ph.D scholar, said, “We witness many accidents on the campus. Many of our friends residing in the university hostels are becoming victims. How can we forget Shilpashree who died in an accident inside the campus two years ago? During morning hours, walkers and joggers get into the campus in their vehicles, park them and walk. We demand that this also should be banned. Construction of flyover will definitely put an end to all these.”
