Amid the growing need to regulate electronic waste or e-waste, the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has taken an initiative to set up a total of 100 e-waste collection bins across the state, with 50 collection bins in Bengaluru alone.
Different locations have been identified for placing e-waste collection bins, including Vidhana Soudha, the High Court and malls, among others.
As of now, KSPCB board has issued licences to 150 dismantlers, refurbishing and recycling units, of which only 86 are operational for the recycling and treatment of e-waste in the state.
To ensure proper treatment of e-waste in the final stage, it becomes very important to regulate proper collection of e-waste at source. Therefore, placing e-waste collection bins across the state will help in a systematic collection of e-waste from across areas.
According to a report published in The Indian Express (IE), Rudresh Murthy, environmental officer at KSPCB explained that the amount of e-waste generation comparatively exceeded the amount of waste recycled, further affecting the environment.
Citing the disparity between the generation and treatment of e-waste, he added that last year, India generated 3.2 million tonnes of e-waste of which we have a capacity to process only 1.5 million tonne of e-waste.
Electronic waste or e-waste can be simply understood as loosely discarded, broken electronic items or products like fans, heaters, mobile phones, laptops, hard drives and much more. These electronic items, if not disposed off properly, can be dangerous due to the toxic chemicals in them, further leading to adverse human effects and environmental pollution.
