5 more arrested for murder during Kanpur's 1984 anti-Sikh riots

The probe team has arrested five more people in connection with the triple murder that took place in Kidwai Nagar during the 1984 anti-Sikh Kanpur riots.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the mass killings during the 1984 anti-Sikh Kanpur riots on Wednesday arrested five more people in connection with the triple murder that took place in Kidwai Nagar area in the city that year.
The five arrested have been identified as Anil Kumar, Ram alias Baggad, Mustakim, Abdul Waheed and Irshad. All the accused arrested are above 60 years old.
“The series of arrests continues in the 1984 Sikh riot case. Five more have been arrested by the SIT, taking the total number of arrests to 27,” Deputy Inspector General of Police, SIT, Balendu Bhushan said.
On October 31 1984, 127 Sikhs were massacred during riots in the city after the assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
The SIT, constituted by the Uttar Pradesh government in 2019, on the orders of the Supreme Court, has been probing the anti-Sikh riots' cases in the city for the last three years.
The probe team has identified 96 people as prime suspects, of which 23 have died. Details of over three dozen suspects were gathered and it helped the SIT nab the 27 people, the officer said.
On July 6, the SIT had arrested four people, including two brothers, followed by four more arrests on the next day. By July 14, 22 people had been held.
