Yahoo mail to officially stop in China from February 28

Yahoo mail to officially stop in China from February 28

India Today
Sunday, February 27, 2022 03:12:16 PM UTC

Yahoo mail will officially stop working in mainland China from tomorrow, February 28. The company has already windup all its other operations in the country.

Yahoo previously announced that from November 1, 2021, users will not be able to use Yahoo’s products and services from mainland China. However, the company still retains a small number of services such as mailboxes.

However, in a recent move, Yahoo Mail announced today that it will stop services in mainland China on February 28. After February 28, people in mainland China will no longer be able to receive or send emails using Yahoo Mail.

Following the lead of other major tech companies, such as Microsoft and Google, Yahoo had also announced back in November that it would be exiting China due to the communist government’s increasing scrutiny on how much data these companies could collect.

The news may prompt a further exodus of companies from the world’s most populous country as regulations continue to tighten, and businesses continuing operations in China need to be aware of the rules the government expects companies to follow.

Presently, many of Yahoo’s products and services are no longer accessible in mainland China. Yahoo was once the world’s first portal search website, with operations in 24 countries and regions. However, it was quickly surpassed by Google in the late 1990s.
