The BJP has named Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhakhar as the NDA's choice to be the next vice-president of India. Party chief JP Nadda addressed Dhankhar as kisan putra (farmer's son) during the announcement, highlighting Dhankhar’s humble background and ability to connect with people.
Born in an agricultural family at Kithana village in Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu district, 71-year-old Dhankar not only has a successful career in politics but also has a great legal career.
Dhankhar’s life story reflects the spirit of new India, overcoming innumerable social and economic hurdles and achieving one’s goals. The self-made lawyer-politician used to walk 5 km every day to attend school as a child. He had also won scholarships at the Sainik School in Chittorgarh.

After finishing his graduation in Physics, he pursued a degree in Law from the University of Rajasthan. Despite being a first-generation professional, he became one of the leading lawyers in the state. Dhankhar has practiced in both the Rajasthan High Court and the Supreme Court of India.
He was the youngest president of the Rajasthan High Court Bar Association. Dhankar has been both an MP and an MLA. The seasoned administrator has been a public representative for more than three decades.
He entered public life after getting elected as a Member of Parliament from Jhunjhunu in the 1989 Lok Sabha elections.
