Days after a Delhi court discharged him in the excise policy case, AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday sharpened his attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying “when a tyrant is scared, it signals the end of his rule”.
Addressing a public meeting at Jantar Mantar, his first since the court relief, the former Delhi chief minister alleged the liquor policy probe was part of a conspiracy to politically target him and the Aam Aadmi Party. He described the court’s ruling as “historic” and said it reaffirmed his claim of being “kattar imaandar” (hardcore honest).
A Delhi trial court on Friday discharged Kejriwal, former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia and 21 others in the case linked to the now-scrapped excise policy. In its order, the court criticised the CBI’s chargesheet, saying it suffered from “internal contradictions” that weakened the conspiracy theory.
In his public address after discharge, Kejriwal accused the prime minister of being fearful of critics and claimed the BJP’s “countdown” from power had begun. He also alleged that during the BJP’s years in power, sectors such as education, healthcare, roads and sanitation had deteriorated.
Taking a swipe at the Centre’s “Viksit Bharat” pitch, he said people were instead seeking a “Rahne Layak Bharat (a liveable India)” and urged the government to focus on preventing exam paper leaks.
Kejriwal further alleged the excise case was part of the “biggest political conspiracy” in independent India aimed at finishing AAP. He challenged the BJP to hold fresh elections in Delhi, claiming the party would fail to cross even 10 seats.
