In a fresh advisory issued on Friday, May 27, the central government cautioned against sharing a copy of your Aadhaar card as it can be misused. It strongly urged citizens to use a ‘Masked Aadhaar’, which was introduced by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) last year to protect Aadhaar card holders from fraud.
A Masked Aadhaar is a 12-digit ID number that can be shared without revealing anything important about your personal information. The first eight base numbers of the Aadhaar card are written as 'XXXX-XXXX' in masked Aadhaar card ID. This way, your Aadhaar card number becomes invisible to strangers, which prevents one's personal details from being misused.
1. Go to https://eaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/ and click on 'Download Aadhaar' option.
2. Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar card number.
3. Choose the option ‘I want a Masked Aadhaar’.
4. Enter the Captcha verification code that will be provided for verification.
5. Click on ‘Send OTP’.
