Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for invoking the Covid-19 pandemic in his recent statement on the West Asia crisis, saying the prime minister had “forgotten the kind of tragedies” the country witnessed during that period.
Speaking to reporters in the Parliament complex, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha said PM Modi’s remarks about a “Covid-like time” returning were insensitive, given the scale of suffering during the pandemic. “He has forgotten what had happened then, how many people had died and what kind of tragedies had unfolded,” Gandhi said.
He also mounted a sharp attack on the government’s foreign policy, alleging that it had become “the PM’s personal foreign policy” and was being viewed as a “universal joke”. Referring to global perceptions, Gandhi claimed that Donald Trump “knows exactly what Mr. Modi can do and what he cannot do," adding, “If the PM is compromised, our foreign policy is compromised.”
On the evolving West Asia situation, Gandhi suggested that India lacked an independent strategic position. He alleged that key decisions were being influenced externally and claimed the prime minister “will do what America and Israel say”, rather than act in India’s interests.
Gandhi also questioned the government’s handling of the crisis, warning of its potential economic fallout. “It is the beginning — LPG, petrol, fertiliser, all these would pose a problem,” he said, adding that the government lacked a clear understanding of the situation.
He said he would not be able to attend the all-party meeting on West Asia scheduled for Wednesday due to a prior engagement in Kerala, but stressed that a wider debate was necessary.
