Vizag Port aims to become a net-zero maritime hub by 2047, focusing on renewable energy and zero-emission vessels.
The Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) has unveiled a ₹384-crore roadmap, aimed at transforming it into a net-zero maritime hub by 2047.
Central to the plan is a massive energy revolution. The port is in the process of tripling its solar capacity from 10MW to 30MW. This expansion will power the full mechanisation of all bulk material terminals, supported by a sophisticated Energy Management System (EMS), utilising 320 digital meters to ensure real-time efficiency.
Furthering its ‘Maritime India Vision 2030’, the VPA has awarded a ₹384.33-crore contract for the nation’s first 60-tonne Battery Electric Tug. This zero-emission vessel will replace traditional diesel tugs, ensuring silent and eco-friendly ship maneuvering.
The port is racing to meet the 2027 deadline to complete its ‘Green Shield’—a major initiative to reach one million plantations—and to transition its entire fleet to EV and CNG vehicles.
The infrastructure is scaling up, with high-capacity 120kW DC fast-charging stations and the electrification of 100% of the port’s railway lines (currently 75% complete) expected by the next year.
“As of March 2026, the VPA stands as India’s premier leader in sustainable maritime operations, having already achieved 100% renewable energy utilisation for its existing operational needs. It remains the only major port in India to reach this milestone, drastically reducing its dependence on conventional power,” VPA Deputy Chairperson Roshni A. Korati told The Hindu.
