BNP suggest citizen-led solutions to tackle Bengaluru garbage blackspots

BNP proposes citizen-led solutions to enhance Bengaluru's garbage collection and address persistent blackspots through improved coordination and participation.
A report released by the Bengaluru Navanirmana Party (BNP) has challenged the belief that garbage blackspots in Bengaluru are mainly caused by a lack of waste collection, stating that the problem is linked to gaps in coordination and limited citizen participation.
The report, based on BNP’s ‘Follow the Garbage’ campaign, points out that while waste collection takes place in many areas, the system does not always match the day-to-day realities of residents.
The report found that several small but practical issues prevent people from using the door-to-door garbage collection system properly. In many cases, collection happens when residents are away at work. Some residents also avoid leaving garbage bags outside their homes because stray dogs may tear them open. In rental houses, tenants sometimes face restrictions from landlords about where garbage can be kept.
As an immediate step, BNP has suggested a 15-day action plan for ward officials. The recommendations include ensuring that waste collection contractors cover all streets, disinfecting existing blackspots and installing ‘Kasa Kiosks’ or community garbage bins for residents who miss the collection timing.
