Video: Routine lift ride turns dangerous as pack of gas-filled balloons explode in
India Today
A routine lift ride in Mumbai's Goregaon West turned dangerous after a hydrogen gas–filled balloon burst inside an elevator, triggering a brief fire that left two people with minor injuries.
It was an ordinary day. A woman stepped into a residential building lift in Mumbai, carrying a trolley, going about her business. Moments later, a man entered carrying a plastic bag stuffed with balloons, followed by another young man with a backpack. The lift doors slid shut behind them. Nothing unusual yet.
But, as the woman briefly turned towards the mirror to check her appearance, the ordinary turned terrifying. The balloons burst. And within seconds, flames filled the confined space.
All three inside the lift reacted instinctively. The doors opened, and they managed to rush out before the fire could intensify. Two of them suffered minor burn injuries.
The incident occurred at Anmol Towers, a residential building opposite a petrol pump in Mumbai's Goregaon West, where gas–filled balloons were being transported through the elevator.
According to information available, the balloons – commonly used for decoration and roadside sales – were filled with hydrogen gas, which is known to be highly flammable. Authorities have repeatedly cautioned against transporting gas-filled balloons in enclosed spaces such as elevators due to the risk of fire.
The entire episode was captured on a CCTV camera installed inside the lift, clearly showing how rapidly the situation escalated. Hydrogen is known to ignite easily, and even a small spark or static discharge in a confined space can trigger fire.

This moment comes days after the Supreme Court allowed Harish Rana to die with dignity – a historic first court-ordered case of passive euthanasia in India. The court acknowledged the medical opinion that Rana will never recover and that the tubes that feed him and keep him alive are only prolonging his pain.
