In a social media post, CM Pushkar Singh Dhami said that an expert committee headed by honourable Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai has been constituted to implement the Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has announced that an expert committee headed by a former Supreme Court judge has been constituted to implement the Uniform Civil Code in the state. "This is to impart uniformity to all religious communities and to conserve the culture of Devbhoomi," he said.

The Uniform Civil Code is a proposal in India to formulate and implement personal laws of citizens, which apply to all citizens equally regardless of their religion, sex, gender and sexual orientation. Currently, personal laws of various communities are governed by their religious scriptures. The Supreme Court has also emphasized the need for this uniform law many times.

Once implemented, Uttarakhand will be the second state after Goa in the country to enforce it, Dhami said.

According to highly placed sources of the central government, an entire blueprint is being prepared for this. Soon, the Bill will be ready. At present, only a few states are starting it. But later, after the Bill is passed by Parliament, the same civil law of the states will be merged with the central law.

The committee formed for the Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand is headed by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, former Supreme Court judge and chairperson of the Jammu and Kashmir Delimitation Commission. Other members of the committee include former Delhi High Court judge Justice Pramod Kohli, social activist Manu Gaur, former IAS officer Shatrughan Singh and Doon University Vice Chancellor Surekha Dangwal.
