UP farmers use unusual 'bear trick' to protect fields from monkeys
India Today
Farmers in UP's Sambhal district adopt bear costumes to deter monkeys, highlighting both innovation and absence of official support.
In a striking example of jugaad, farmers in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal have begun wearing bear costumes to protect their crops from monkeys. The now-viral video captures how this simple idea is helping them tackle a costly and persistent problem.
A video from Firozpur village showing men in bear costumes patrolling fields has gone viral, drawing attention to both the ingenuity and desperation of rural farmers dealing with wildlife intrusion.
For months, villagers had been grappling with a growing monkey menace that was destroying crops worth lakhs. With over 250 monkeys frequenting the area, farmers say their fields of potatoes, maize, and strawberries were being ravaged almost daily.
Traditional deterrents failed, pushing them to experiment with something unconventional.
That’s when a few farmers, including Dharmveer, decided to try wearing bear costumes and masks while guarding their land. The idea was simple — mimic a natural predator to scare the monkeys away.
Surprisingly, it worked. As seen in the viral video, the moment the “bear” enters the field, monkeys scatter instantly, whether they are on the ground or perched on nearby rooftops.
