UP Assembly makes history with day reserved for women members, inflation, unemployment at forefront

The Uttar Pradesh Assembly made history by reserving a day for the women members to speak. Issues like crimes against women, inflation and unemployment were at the forefront in the discussions.

The Uttar Pradesh Legislature made history on Thursday after both the Houses decided to reserve the day for women legislators to speak. The move was met with praise from both the ruling and opposition parties.

The session commenced with opening remarks by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. He said that the government has been working towards the upliftment of women. He said equality for women started from the very first election where women were given equal rights.

He said, "We have seen that behind the words of male leaders in the House, the voice of women members gets suppressed. But today in the proceedings of the House they should realise their mistake while listening to the words of women members.”

The women members spoke on issues like crimes against women, inflation and unemployment.

Congress MLA Aradhana Mishra raised the issue of inflation. She said inflation and unemployment should be controlled in the state for the betterment of women. “The women only handle the household budget, and the price of oil and gas has gone up,” she added.

Samajwadi Party MLA Ragini Sonkar raised the issue of crimes against women and referred to the incidents in Lucknow, Gorakhpur, and other districts in the state. She said that the government needs to make sure that the women in the state are secure and that crimes against women should not be tolerated.
