Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury who came under heavy criticism for his 'rashtrapatni' remark wrote a letter to President Droupadi Murmu to formally apologise.

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who came under heavy criticism for his 'rashtrapatni' remark, wrote a letter to President Droupadi Murmu on Friday and sought an apology.

"I am writing to express my regret for having mistakenly used an incorrect word to describe the position you hold. I assure you that it was a slip of the tongue. I apologize and request you to accept the same," Congress leader said in his letter.

Chowdhury had earlier referred to President Droupadi Murmu as 'Rashtrapatni' in a video clip following which a massive row erupted in Parliament.

His remark was criticised by BJP MPs who protested in Parliament. Union ministers Smriti Irani and Nirmala Sitharaman were among the BJP leaders who demanded that Congress president Sonia Gandhi should apologise for Chowdhury's remark.

The BJP MPs raised slogans and demanded the resignation of Sonia Gandhi over Adhir Ranjan's ‘rashtrapatni’ remark.

On Thursday, the Congress MP from Behrampore said he would apologise to President Droupadi Murmu but not to the “pakhandi (fraud)” BJP MPs who protested against his apparent “slip of tongue”. Chowdhury had said the whole incident was blown out of proportion by the BJP and his remark was the result of a slip of tongue.
