
Trump says US will open Venezuela airspace by day end, Americans can visit soon

US President Donald Trump said he had instructed US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and military officials to open Venezuela's airspace by the end of the day. He further said that major American oil corporations would be flying in to scout locations.
US President Donald Trump on Thursday said that Americans would soon be able to visit Venezuela, shortly after stating that he had informed interim President Delcy Rodrguez that the country’s airspace would reopen by the end of the day.
Last November, Trump declared that the airspace "above and surrounding Venezuela" would be considered "closed in its entirety." Although it was not a legal closure announced by Venezuela, several international flights suspended operations amid a US naval build-up in the Atlantic ahead of Nicolas Maduro’s ouster.
He said that he instructed the US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and US military officials to open Venezuela's airspace by end of the day. He further said that major American oil corporations would be flying in to scout locations.
"American citizens will be very shortly able to go to Venezuela, and they’ll be safe there," said Trump.
Earlier this week, Trump's Republican administration notified Congress that it was taking the first steps to possibly reopen the shuttered U.S. Embassy in Venezuela as it explores restoring relations with the South American country following the US military raid that ousted then-President Nicolas Maduro.
In a notice to lawmakers dated Monday and obtained by The Associated Press on Tuesday, the State Department said it was sending in a regular and growing contingent of temporary staffers to conduct “select” diplomatic functions.
