Three in five women in India at risk of anaemia: health analysis

Analysis reveals high risk of anaemia, thyroid disorders, diabetes, and lipid disorders among women in the country. Prioritize health.

Three women of every five in the country may be at risk of anaemia, and one in five may be at risk of thyroid disorder, reveals an analysis of health data from over 1 million women.

The two-year analysis, conducted by Redcliffe Labs, a diagnostic healthcare provider, also found that an increasing number of women are being diagnosed with diabetes and lipid disorders, a press release said.

Anaemia is a condition in which the number of red blood cells or the haemoglobin concentration within them is lower than normal. This can lead to fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath and other symptoms -- the World Health Organization classifies it as a serious global public health problem. The analysis found that women were three times more vulnerable than men when it came to anaemia.

Thyroid disorders are conditions that keep the thyroid from making the right amount of necessary hormones. Untreated thyroid disorders can cause a number of health complications.

The findings in relation to diabetes and lipid disorders are in line with findings that have noted a rise in non-communicable diseases across the country, a large chunk of which are due to unhealthy diets and lifestyles.

The findings, the press release states, are a call to women to prioritise their health, undergo regular screenings and adopt healthier lifestyles with a proactive approach to healthcare.
