Delhi Minister mandates 'third gender' option in welfare forms to empower transgender community, raise awareness on rights.
Delhi Social Welfare Minister Ravinder Indraj Singh on Friday announced that a ‘third gender’ option will be mandatorily included in all application forms of government welfare schemes, to ensure that transgender persons can avail the benefits.
The announcement was made after a delegation of transgender representatives met Mr. Singh in connection with the National Transgender Day Week on Friday. Mr. Singh said that the delegation discussed various government schemes aimed at enabling transgender individuals to live with dignity and become self-reliant.
He added that the government would undertake efforts to raise public awareness about transgender rights and their social inclusion, and the available welfare schemes. A notification regarding the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Rules will also be issued, he said.
