GVMC council ends term, celebrates major achievements

GVMC council concludes its five-year term, highlighting significant development projects and global events that enhanced Visakhapatnam's recognition.
The five-year tenure of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) council concluded on Tuesday (March 17, 2026). District Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad will assume charge as the Special Officer of the GVMC on Wednesday (March 18).
On the final day of the council, several corporators participated in the development activities across different wards, ensuring that ongoing works were expedited. Many areas witnessed a push in infrastructure projects such as road extensions, drainage systems, and underground drainage (UGD) works, with corporators urging officials to complete pending projects at the earliest.
In Gajuwaka, a park developed at Pedagantyada was inaugurated, and a pickleball court along with an open gym for the public were opened at Ward 22.
Meanwhile, the GVMC organised a farewell programme for the 2021–26 council at a hotel in Rushikonda. The event was arranged by GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg and attended by South MLA Vamsikrishna Srinivas, Mayor Peela Srinivasa Rao, Deputy Mayors Dalli Govindaraju and Kattamuri Satish, along with floor leaders of various political parties and corporators.
Addressing the gathering, Mayor Peela Srinivasa Rao expressed satisfaction over serving the people during the council’s tenure and contributing to the city’s development. He noted that corporators, officials, and staff worked in close coordination, functioning like a single unit to ensure smooth administration. He also highlighted GVMC’s role in hosting major events such as Yogandhra, the CII Summit, IFR, and Visakha Utsav, stating that these initiatives brought recognition to the city on a global platform.
Commissioner Ketan Garg stated that development works worth ₹15,000 crore were executed during the council’s tenure, adding that these achievements would remain a significant milestone in GVMC’s history.
