Delhi Speaker Vijender Gupta has written to Lieutenant-Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu seeking directions to instal audible signals at traffic intersections across the city to ensure the safety of mobility-impaired individuals and senior citizens.
“With an estimated 12 to 18 lakh people living with significant low vision, many of whom are senior citizens, the current traffic systems are inadequate for those who cannot rely on visual cues. The lack of accessible crossing aids poses a constant risk of accidents and limits the mobility of a vast section of the population,” the Assembly Secretariat stated in an official release.
The Speaker stated that there are successful international models where sound-based cues, such as beeps or ticking tones, are standard features at intersections. He said that countries such as Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, Singapore, and France, among others, have successfully integrated these systems to improve pedestrian accessibility.
