Thiagarajan Kumararaja’s groundbreaking debut film, ‘Aaranya Kaandam’, is hitting theaters again, more than a decade after its original drop on June 10, 2011
Thiagarajan Kumararaja’s debut movie Aaranya Kaandamis set for re-release. Produced by playback singer and actor SP Charan, the Tamil movie first released on June 10, 2011.
“Some films don’t age. They become cult classic,” Charan, son of legendary singer SP Balasubrahmanyam, posted on social media, announcing the re-release date. The critically-acclaimed movie will re-release again March 13, 2026.

A neo-noir film with a strong presence of dark humour, Aaranya Kaandam went on to win two National Awards. Kumararaja clinched the Best First Film of a Director honour while Praveen KL and NB Srikanth were adjudged the best editors.
The movie starred Ravi Krishna, Jackie Shroff, Sampath Raj, Yasmin Ponnappa and Guru Somasundaram. Yuvan Shankar Raja was the music composer while PS Vinod handled the cinematography.
Aaranya Kaandamwas replete with pop-culture references and the gangster movie dealt with themes of desire and destiny with philosophical undertones. The movie was praised for its realistic filmmaking. Eight years after the release of his first movie, Kumararaja made Super Deluxe (2019), another critically-acclaimed thriller, starring Vijay Sethupathi, Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Fahadh Faasil.
