Singer and songwriter Taylor Swift received an honourary doctorate degree in Fine Arts from New York University on Wednesday. Dressed in a purple robe and a black student cap, she also delivered a speech at the graduation ceremony in Yankee Stadium.
"Life can be heavy, especially if you try to carry it all at once... all the grudges, all the updates on your ex.... You get to pick what your life has time and room for," Swift told students in her address.
"I have some good news - it's totally up to you. I have some terrifying news - It's totally up to you," she added. "Never be ashamed of trying - effortlessness is a myth," Swift further said.
The singer also added a punch of humour to her speech. “I’m 90% sure that the reason I’m here is because I have a song called 22,” Swift quipped as she spoke to the Class of 2022.
The Grammy winner also shared a snippet from the special day on Instagram. She posted a video of herself getting ready for the ceremony and wrote, “wearing a cap and gown for the very first time - see you soon NY.”
This marks Swift’s first college degree. “I’d like to thank NYU for making me technically, on paper at least, a doctor. Not the type of doctor you would want around in the event of an emergency,” she joked while accepting the doctorate degree.
She was among three recipients of honorary degrees from the university.
