Tamil Nadu's Electricity Minister reports lower power demand this summer, with increased wind energy generation and improved consumer grievance redressal.
Electricity Minister S.S. Sivasankar on Saturday said Tamil Nadu’s power demand so far in the current summer has been lower than last year, due to rains in parts of the State.
Speaking to reporters in Chennai, he said the wind energy generation had also picked up. Tamil Nadu reached an all-time high peak power demand of 20,830 MW on May 2, 2024, and the record high daily consumption of 454.32 million units on April 30, 2024. The State’s peak demand was 19,864 MW and overall energy requirement was 11,705 million units in April 2025, as per data from Central Electricity Authority. The maximum demand met on May 16 was 18,868 MW, as per data from Southern Regional Load Despatch Centre.
Amid public complaints due to extreme summer heat and severe weather conditions, Mr. Sivasankar reviewed the operations of ‘Minnagam’, the 24x7 consumer grievance redressal centre at TANGEDCO headquarters. He pointed out that to handle the complaints efficiently, the staff strength at Minnagam has been increased to 94 from May 5 from the earlier strength of 65.
Mr. Sivasankar instructed officials to pay special attention to areas experiencing frequent disruptions in power supply and to identify and resolve underlying issues without delay. There was no gap between the demand and supply of power in the State. All measures had been taken to tackle the current summer and upcoming monsoon period, according to a release.
