Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has called for an all-party meeting after the state governor returned the bill seeking exemption from the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has called for an all-party meeting after the Governor returned the bill seeking exemption to the state from the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).

In a press statement, the chief minister said that the Governor's reasons for returning the bill against NEET are not acceptable to the people of Tamil Nadu.

The next course of action will be decided in all-party meeting and the statement also adds that all efforts would be taken to get the bill passed again.

Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi returned the bill stating that the bill is against the interest of the students. A statement from Raj Bhavan said the bill is against students coming from socially and economically poor background.

NEET has emotional undertones in the state in the backdrop of alleged suicides of medical aspirants, either for failing to clear it or due to apprehensions over scoring low marks. The death of a Dalit girl in 2017 by suicide over failing in NEET prompted outrage in the state and calls for the abolition of NEET.

The bill introduced by the state assembly states that entrance test is not a fair or equitable method of admission since it favoured the rich and elite sections of society.
