Rabid dog attacks over 35 people in Kannur, Kerala, prompting hospital visits and eventual death of the dog.
A suspected rabid dog attacked and injured more than 35 people in Anjarakandy and Chembilode panchayats in Kannur, Kerala, on Thursday (March 20, 2025).
The stray dog first attacked people walking along the Chala Koyode road around 7 a.m. Later, it bit people at Poduvacheri, Iriveri, Panerichal, Muzhappala, Chakkarakkal town and Chakkarakkal Sona road, Chirakkat in Anjarakandy and Chembilode panchayats. Victims included those waiting at bus stops, walking on roads or standing in verandahs and kitchens.
Among the seriously injured, T. K. Ramachandran from Iriveri who sustained severe facial injuries was admitted to a private hospital at Chala. Three others sought treatment in Kannur Medical College Hospital at Anjarakandy, while the remaining victims were taken to Kannur district hospital.
The stray dog was eventually beaten to death by Shaji (50), who was attacked by the dog.
Anjarakandy panchayat K.P Lohithakshan and District Medical Officer Piyus Namboothiripad visited the hospital to assess the situation and meet the injured.
