Sunil Bose, Chamarajanagar MP, has drawn the attention of the Lok Sabha to the stalled railway projects in the district, including the Hejjala-Chamarajanagar line and urged the government to restart the projects to strengthen the railway network in the region for the benefit of the common people.
A statement here said that the MP had pointed out that hundreds of workers from Chamarajanagar district travel daily to Bengaluru for work. They are forced to travel from Chamarajanagar to Mysuru and from Mysuru to Bengaluru.
One of the long-pending demands is the implementation of the railway line between Chamarajanagar and Hejjala on the outskirts of Bengaluru. The demand for the Hejjala-Chamarajanagar railway line, which is about 140 km, has been persisting for decades, he noted.
The project was announced in 1996-97, and around ₹1,382 crore was allocated for the project during 2013-14. But, even the process of land acquisition has not yet begun, he lamented.
The primary reason for the delay is that the project is proposed to be implemented with 50:50 funding from the State and Union governments, he said.
Pointing out that Railways was a subject that fell entirely under the Union government, and that the benefits of the project will accrue to the Centre, Mr. Bose urged the Union government to bear 100% of the project and complete it on priority. Pointing out that more than 50% of the district consists of forest area, and that the district is environmentally sensitive and backward, he urged the Centre to take up the project entirely with its funds.
