Special prayers mark Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations in Madurai
Eid-ul-Fitr which marks the end of the month-long fasting during the month of Ramadan was celebrated with religious fervour in Madurai district on Saturday.
Muslims in large numbers gathered at Idgah grounds and offered special prayers. Special prayers were offered for world peace and prosperity. Following the prayers, they shared greetings with each other. Later, they exchanged sweets and gifts with their friends and relatives.
They also distributed the essential commodities, food and new clothes to the needy people so that they do not go hungry on the occasion and celebrated like the others.
Government Kazi of Madurai A. Syed Khaja Mueenudeen said the spirit of the festival was charity. The people identified the needy people and provided essential commodities to them so that the poor also offered special prayers and celebrated with their family members. Food was also distributed to the needy people.
One part of the income should be spent on the needy people. Offering alms to the needy was a significant part of the celebrations, he said.

India’s gem and jewellery industry continues to demonstrate remarkable resilience and a spirit of innovation, said Kirit Bhansali, chairman of the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), at the inauguration of the 4th edition of IIJS Bharat-Tritiya 2026 at Bengaluru International Exhibition Centre (BIEC) here on Saturday, March 21.
